What you need to qualify
Two years of experience determining eligibility for an agency program by interviewing to assess the needs of clients, and interpreting and applying the policies, rules, and guidelines that are applicable to the client's situation.
OR
Any college courses may be substituted for the two years of general experience on a year-for-year basis (45 quarter hours is equivalent to one year of experience). A photocopy of your transcripts must be attached to your application materials if using college courses to meet the minimum qualifications.
Essential attributes
We are looking for candidates with:
- Experience working objectively and supporting people under emotional and financial stress and from a variety of cultures
- Technical and attention to detail is vital
- Ability to make decisions and elicit pertinent information in interviewing situations while allowing the client dignity and respect
- Experience working and collaborating in a team environment
- Bilingual encouraged (Spanish, Vietnamese, Russian). Other languages welcome

Your duties at a glance
As a Benefits and Eligibility Worker, you will:
- Determine initial eligibility for Medicaid, APD Financial Eligibility, TANF, SNAP, Medical and Employment Related Day Care applicants
- Interview applicants by phone to gather information to assess and determine if there is a need for services and benefits
- Explain the programs, policies and procedures,
- Provide in-depth interviewing by comparing information on forms to statements given by the participants
- Analyze all information obtained and apply to policies and guidelines to determine eligibility
- Make decisions to approve or deny the case
Working conditions
The employee’s work is conducted by phone or computer in office or remotely. Work can require travel, including overnight and there is a possibility of working in other sites for special events. Employee will have phone contact with a range of people including some exhibiting anger and frustration. The employee will be exposed to a range of emotionally charged issues and will need to respond professionally, while continuing the eligibility intake.
This position requires that a minimum of the first 90 days be spent in the office. Remote work may be considered after training is complete. The work schedule for this position is 8am to 5pm during training. Once training is completed, the schedule will be either 9:50am-6:50pm or 10:05am-7:05pm Monday-Friday. This is a call center environment where you will be answering incoming calls for the majority of your shift each day.
Office environment has heating, ventilation and air conditioning. This position has limited physical exertion and requires sitting at a terminal answering back to back telephone calls for the majority of the work day.
