POSITION SUMMARY
We are seeking a skilled Contract Immigration Attorney to represent clients in immigration proceedings (mostly Asylum) around the United States, specifically for master calendar hearings and merits hearings. They will also be in charge of reviewing paralegal work and preparing clients prior to court. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in immigration law, excellent oral and written communication skills, ability to travel, and a commitment to providing high-quality legal services to clients from diverse backgrounds.
All of your clients will speak Spanish. If you do not, a staff member will serve as your interpreter.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Representation in Court:
- Appear on behalf of clients at master calendar hearings and merits hearings.
- Advocate effectively for clients' interests and provide knowledgeable legal support.
2. Client Preparation:
- Prepare clients for court appearances, ensuring they understand the proceedings and their rights.
- Conduct pre-hearing meetings to discuss case strategy and address client concerns.
3. Prosecutorial Discretion Requests:
- Prepare and file requests for prosecutorial discretion in relevant cases.
- Liaise with government officials and agencies as needed.
4. Legal Writing:
- Draft legal briefs, motions, and other court-related documents.
- Research and analyze laws, rulings, and regulations pertinent to cases.
PAYMENT STRUCTURE
1. Representation in Court:
- Master Calendar Hearings: $300 per hearing
- Merits/Individual Hearings: $1,200 (Average 4-6 hours per hearing)
2. Client Preparation:
- $45/hour (Time varies based on case complexity)
3. Prosecutorial Discretion Requests:
- $45/hour (Average 2-4 hours per request)
4. Legal Writing:
- $45/hour (Time varies based on the complexity of the brief or motion)
5. Review of Paralegal Work:
- $45/hour (Average 1-2 hours per packet)
Additional Benefits:
- Transportation, lodging, and food expenses will be covered when traveling for court appearances.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school
- Admission and good standing in a state bar association
- Proven experience as an immigration lawyer
- Strong knowledge of immigration laws and regulations
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to effectively litigate cases in immigration court
- Strong legal drafting skills for preparing petitions, applications, and legal documents
- Ability to negotiate on behalf of clients
- Detail-oriented with strong analytical and problem-solving skills
