The tumor registrar will perform case finding activities, abstract eligible cases, and perform follow-up activities. The tumor registrar will perform duties related to cancer conferences which may include, but not limited to, organizing resources, conference notification, technical assistance, and documentation. The tumor registrar will assist with Cancer Committee activities. A Certified Tumor Registrar will attend educational seminars, webinars, etc. in order to maintain certification status.
1. Demonstrates competence in the performance of duties related to case finding and follow-up as required by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (COC) and the New Hampshire State Cancer Registry (NHSCR).
a. Reviews various case finding sources such as pathology reports and hospital medical indices for cases eligible for inclusion in the cancer registry database.
b. Uses appropriate Multiple Primary and Histology Rules (MPH) to differentiate new cases from pre-existing or recurrent cases, differentiate single from multiple primaries, assign appropriate histology codes in cases with complex histologic diagnoses.
c. Uses appropriate tools to identify and abstract cases and resolves edit discrepancies as identified by cancer registry data base validation checks.
d. Works with the cancer registry team to produce monthly query process to physicians, other institutions and registries for follow-up information.
2. Demonstrates competence in case abstraction. Reviews the EMR for medical information to be included in an abstract.
a. Search for medical information from other hospital sources, physician practices and cancer registries as needed to compile a complete abstract.
b. Abstracts all required data elements and supportive text information into the cancer registry database, using coding and abstracting standards as required by the CoC and the NHSCR
c. Records AJCC TNM Stage components, and completes SSDI data elements as required by the CoC and the NHSCR.
3. Performs duties related to cancer conference - organizing resources, conference notification, technical assistance, and documentation.

a. Distributes notification of cancer conference to physicians, allied health professionals, and support staff in accordance with hospital confidentiality policies.
b. Documents conference activity as required by the COC.
4. Meets productivity expectations.
a. Works with the cancer registry team to meet follow-up rate benchmarks.
b. Works with the cancer registry team to meet abstracting timeliness requirements.
Qualifications
Experience Minimum Required
- Two years in a cancer registry abstracting cases.
Education Minimum Required
- Associates Degree in Medical Information or related to Health Care to include medical terminology, human anatomy and physiology, computer skills, healthcare quality/performance improvement
Education Preferred/Desired
- Associates Degree in Medical Information with advanced training in Cancer Registry Management or healthcare quality/performance improvement.
- Bachelors Degree in health care related field or with emphasis on health care.
Special Skills Minimum Required
- Knowledge of most Microsoft Office Products at a level of moderate competency.
- Familiarity of cancer registry software, with special emphasis on Metriq
- Familiarity with electronic medical records with special emphasis on EPIC
- Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR).
